‘True Detective: Night Country’ Showrunner Issa López Is Still Obsessed with Season 1 and Its Sense of a ‘Darker World Beneath the Surface’
True Detective: Night Country will have its own distinct voice, showrunner Issa López says.
But it will also draw heavily on the first season of the acclaimed HBO anthology series, which premiered in 2014 and starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as two Louisiana State Police detectives investigating a macabre murder case.
Season 1 of True Detective was a critical and commercial success, and it's widely considered to be one of the best seasons of television ever made.
It was praised for its dark and atmospheric storytelling, its complex characters, and its stunning cinematography. López says she was particularly drawn to the show's sense of a "darker world beneath the surface."
"I think that's something that's really important to me," López says. "I'm interested in exploring the darkness that's hidden beneath the surface of things, and I think that's something that True Detective does really well."
López says she hopes to bring that same sense of darkness to Night Country, which will be set in Alaska.
The show will follow two female detectives, played by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, as they investigate a series of disappearances in the remote town of Ennis.
López says she's excited to explore the unique challenges and opportunities that come with setting the show in Alaska.
"Alaska is such a vast and unforgiving place," López says. "It's a place where the darkness can really close in on you. I think that's going to create a really unique and unsettling atmosphere for the show."
López says she's also excited to work with Foster and Reis, two actresses she greatly admires.
"Jodie Foster is an icon," López says. "She's one of the greatest actresses of all time. And Kali Reis is an incredible talent. She's a rising star, and I can't wait to see what she does in this role."
López says she's confident that Night Country will be a worthy successor to the first season of True Detective.
"I think we have a really great team," López says. "And I think we have a really great story to tell. I can't wait to share it with the world."
