Kilimandscharo Höhe: How High is Mount Kilimanjaro?

Mount Kilimanjaro's Height

Mount Kilimanjaro stands at 5,895m (19,341ft) above sea level, making it the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. The mountain's height has been measured using various techniques, including GPS, digital elevation models, and barometric altimeters. The measurements have consistently shown that Kilimanjaro exceeds the height of other African peaks, such as Mount Kenya (5,199m) and Mount Stanley (5,109m).

Variations in Height Measurements

Slight variations in Kilimanjaro's height measurements can occur due to factors such as seasonal snow cover and atmospheric conditions. In 2008, the Tanzanian government conducted a resurvey of the mountain and determined its height to be 5,891.8m (19,330.4ft). However, this measurement excluded the Kibo Glacier, which has since melted significantly due to climate change.

Importance of Accurate Height Measurements

Precise measurements of Kilimanjaro's height are crucial for various reasons. They assist climbers in planning their ascents and preparing for the altitude and potential altitude sickness. Accurate height data also helps cartographers and scientists study the mountain's topography, geology, and ecology. Additionally, these measurements contribute to scientific research on climate change and its impact on high-altitude ecosystems.
